Athens offers a renowned music, nightlife, and bar scene that appeals to a multitude of tastes. We’ve listed a few destinations, both to give you some highlights and to provide you with an idea of the broad base of appeal that you’ll find. Whether you are a native of the city looking for something new to do or a visitor planning your next trip, these destinations should be useful to you!

Georgia Theatre: Located at 215 North Lumpkin, the Georgia Theatre offered music of just about every kind. It saw the rise of R.E.M., and the beginnings of the B-52s, while providing up-and-coming bands in Athens and across the country with a starting point for their work. The entry fees were extremely affordable, so this was a great destination that appealed to a number of different tastes and needs. Sadly on June 19, 2009 the historic Georgia Theatre caught fire around 7:00 a.m. and the entire interior of the building was lost. To contribute in the rebuilding visit: http://www.georgiatheatre.com/

Nowhere Bar: In spite of the unassuming name, this bar, located at 240 North Lumpkin, offers a variety of attractions. First, they have 100 different kinds of beer on tap, which makes it fun for the beer lover. Second, the bar has pool tables, video games, and television for entertainment while you’re there.

Half Moon Pub: This pub is more of a place for locals and regulars than for tourists, so if you prefer quieter places off the beaten path this pub is good for you. You can find it at 301 E. Clayton below Flanagan’s. It’s a place where regulars go, and it has a very authentic, polished “pub” atmosphere over a “bar” atmosphere. Check them out online at: http://flanagansathens.homestead.com/

40 Watt Club: Is considered by some to be the heart beat of the Athens Georgia music scene. Founded by musicians and built by people who love music, the 40 Watt is a living museum to music history in Athens GA. Although no longer hard-core punk rock, cutting edge bands play here regularly; offering college students and locals a chance to hear it first. To check out the 40 Watt Club online visit: http://www.40watt.com/

Allen’s: If you’re looking for great food as well as great booze and music, try Allen’s at 801 Hawthorne Avenue. Allen’s bears the distinction of being Athens’ oldest bar and grill since the original location was opened in 1955. They offer great burgers and other food, live local music, and of course, plenty of beer. To check out the Allen’s Bar and Grill online visit: http://www.allensbarandgrill.com/

These five offerings are really just the tip of the iceburg – Athens GA has so much to offer! So, get out of your rut and try something new tonight – there’s something for everyone here.
